Biography

Daniel E. Bacine, a partner in Barrack, Rodos & Bacine, joined the Firm shortly after its creation.  Dan is an experienced civil litigator in both the federal and state courts, having tried jury and non-jury securities and other commercial cases, including cases involving disputes between securities brokerage firms and their customers.  He leads the Firm’s insurance litigation practice group, and is also a key member of the Firm’s case evaluation and client services and corporate governance and shareholder rights practice groups.  He is part of the senior management of BR&B and handles administrative matters for the Firm.

Dan was an adjunct professor of law at Drexel University’s Thomas R. Kline School of Law and an adjunct lecturer in law at Villanova University’s Charles Widger School of Law for a number of years, teaching courses in class actions and complex litigation. He sits as an arbitrator for the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, hearing disputes involving the securities industry, and has chaired numerous FINRA arbitration panels since 2000.

Dan is a past president of Germantown Jewish Centre. He has also held many positions at the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia and is a past chair of the Jewish Publishing Group, publisher of the Jewish Exponent.

Notable Cases

  • Becker v. BNY Mellon Trust Co., N.A., Civil Action No. 2:11-cv-06460 (JRS), before the Honorable Juan R. Sanchez in the Eastern District of California, which settled on the last day of trial, shortly before closing arguments, for $13.5 million on behalf of a class of bondholders of Lower Bucks Hospital.
  • Rieff v. Evans (Allied Mutual Demutualization Litigation), Civil Action No. CE35780, in the Polk County, Iowa, District Court, which resulted in a settlement of $130 million that was distributed to former Allied Mutual policyholders who were disenfranchised following its acquisition by Nationwide Insurance Company.
  • Crandall v. Alderfer (Old Guard Demutualization Litigation), Civil Action No. 97-cv-957, before the Honorable Clifford Scott Green in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, which resulted in a settlement of $7 million distributed to Old Guard policyholders who were harmed as a result of the company’s demutualization.
  • In re Harleysville Mutual, No. 02137 (November 2011 Term), in the Philadelphia, PA, Court of Common Pleas, First Judicial District, which resulted in a settlement of $26 million that was distributed to former Harleysville Mutual policyholders who were adversely affected by the company’s merger into Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company.
